Most Parijat, aka harshringar or night blooming jasmine, isn’t real. The ugly truth is that retailers often use a combination of benzyl acetate, fractionated ylang, and other AC’s to approximate the smell of this star-shaped flower that isn’t really even a part of the Jasmine family. A true Parijat is hard to find, and a traditionally distilled oil, cooked in Gandharan clay pots is exceptionally rare, but that’s precisely what you will find in JEMS 4, acquired directly from the distiller himself. This distillation technique produces an oil that could hardly be described as floral: more like mitti than magnolia, more like frankincense than freesia, the end result is a sharply astringent, densely resinous, slightly earthy, bitterly herbal-yet-beautiful oil quite similar to the highest quality Elemi. The Parijat is enhanced with Frankincense Frereana three ways: tincture, absolute, and essential oil, and counterbalanced with tart fruit notes of cassis, strawberry, and raspberry, then finished with clove, cinnamon, and bay leaf spice. Ambergris and Mongolian musk give the composition lift, Filipino oud, costus and wool musk keep it here on Earth.
